It is with great pride and pleasure that North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team have been presented with a Northumbria Police commendation from Chief Constable Winton Keenan alongside Superintendent Andy Huddleston.
Rarely presented to anyone outside of the police service, it is a recognition of the vital role played by the teams during the ‘Beast from the East’ in March 2018. With regular emergency vehicles stranded, our two teams were out round the clock dealing with all sorts of issues.
For example, team members helped people to get to and from hospital for routine appointments as well as for emergencies. Team members also rescued people from stranded vehicles and brought them to safety. All the training came to the fore and everyone rose to the occasion when the pressure was on.
Gratefully received by team leaders Rachel Smith and Iain Nixon alongside various other team members. This will be Rachel’s last act as team leader of North of Tyne and a fitting tribute to all the hard work and effort she has put in to the role.
